Iter 8

Via Appia Antica, «Regina Viarum» or «Queen of Roads» was begun by Appius Claudius in 312 BC to unite Rome with the south of the Italian peninsula.

Today it is a regional park. It was flanked for many miles by the sepulchres of noble families, the only ones who could have their tombs along this road. Via Appia Antica as we see it today was organized in the middle of the nineteenth century by Luigi Canina; as far as the fourth mile it offers an evocative stroll, with ancient finds at intervals on both sides.
