was the point of arrival for the cortèges celebrating the
triumphs of generals passing along the Via Sacra. We reach the
Campidoglio up the staircase known as the Cordonata, at the top
of which Gregory XIII had placed the colossal groups of the Dioscuri.
The Capitoline hill dominates the Forum Romanum, the most famous
and classical part of ancient Rome: stupendous temples, triumphal
arches and monuments of every sort. Looking at the ruins on this
hill, we can easily visualize the life which animated ancient
Rome.
To the right of the valley of the Forum Romanum, we see the Palatine
Hill, where the Rome's first nucleus came into being. |
